Active Schools - Girls on the Move
The Active Schools Team in West Dunbartonshire Council have set up a Dance Project aimed at getting more secondary girls more active.
After successfully applying for a £2000 grant through the Girls on the Move Participation Programme, the Active Schools Team were able to create after school girls-only dance clubs in each of the five secondary schools in the local authority. These clubs ran throughout two terms during the school year 2010-11 and were delivered by professional dance teachers from clubs in the local area. The Dance Project culminated in the very first West Dunbartonshire Dance Festival at St. Peter the Apostle High School in Clydebank during National School Sport Week in June 2011.
Several clubs from local primary schools also came up with their own fantastic dance routines to display. Around 180 young people from 12 schools across West Dunbartonshire took part. A capacity audience also came along to cheer on the participants with all proceeds from tickets going to the Breast Cancer Campaign charity.
Yvonne Orrock, Active Schools Coordinator, says: “Thanks to the Girls on the Move grant, the Dance Project and Festival were a huge success and Active Schools are planning to build on this to make next years Dance programme even bigger and better.”
